Love the West but stick to the East.
On my current trip to India, I see so much change (I say for the better, some say for the worse) it's unbelievable.
In terms of fashion, men and women are dressing differently that what they did five years ago. They seem to be more aware of trends and brands now than they ever did before. Even though there is a modern touch to it, something seems to be off.
People seem to be going after labels and designers blindly without knowing what actually suits their shape and age.
Recently, I happened to bump into a childhood friend and my jaw dropped to the floor seeing her. I don't remember what she wore but I'm sure it was great. Her eye makeup was so loud that it didn't allow me to focus on her outfit. She had the colours of the peacock on her eyes, literally, all of them painted across her eye lids. Plus the glitter.
This is when it's important to know, that trends are one thing and style is another and, the model in the ad for a makeup brand has been photoshopped.
Indian fashion, entertainment and lifestyle magazines showcase more trends and styles than other countries as they cover both the Indian and International fashion scene. That's where some people can't understand how to go about making it their own style.
Another example, the A-line Kurta (a tunic that can be as short as hip length to one that's long as just above the ankle) is very much in trend now. Everyone seems to be wearing it; be it a young 22 yr old to her mum who could be 45+. While no one can beat a teenager and a 22 yr old who owns a killer body, her mum who's petite plus size just looks like she's trying too hard to blend in, but ends up looking older than she really is and looks like she's wearing a tent.
Men on the other hand, seem to be in love with GQ and Arjun Rampal. Men are wearing skinny pants and faded or torn jeans. Now, this is a big problem. This I hope I'll say for the last time, if you have a tummy and wear skinny jeans or tights you're going to look like an ice-cream cone or a tomato on toothpicks.
Designers in India and Internationally, focus on trends without realising that not all trends suit all people. Yes, a model with a small bust, flat tummy and butt looks great in every piece that she's in, that's why she's called a 'Model'.
Some Indian designers are nailing it on the head. They're mixing what's great about India with the best from the International scene and putting it together.
Styles that are conservative yet very modern and have a Western touch to it.
